There are many different types of electronic reading devices that are available today. Some have been around for quite a while, some have evolved into improved versions and yet there are others that have just joined the club. The obvious advantage for the new players is that they have the benefit of learning from the earlier entrants and incorporating the needs of users into their newly launched models. There would certainly be room for improvement in the new models of electronic reading devices, however, they would still be ahead with the new features.

What Makes The Difference?

Quality, variety and amount of content. Expanding book-based content to one that includes newspapers, magazines, blogs and the Web. All content is downloaded and ready to be accessed at your convenience. You get to read or view only the main content as all other unnecessary visuals, ads and other distractions are filtered out.

Wireless connectivity. Do they bring the freedom and power to textual content that the cell phone brought to voice communications? Wireless downloading of books in just a few seconds. This may be a problem if a reader lacks discipline. You might downloading more than what you can manage financially. However, just like credit cards, you must learn how to use them prudently.

A device that works and works well. One that delivers not in terms of just looks but value added content and practical features. Content that is crisp and readable. Fonts that are extremely legible, adjustable to various sizes and availability of italics. Page switching that can be done easily though it might take a little practice.

Device size that is suitable for reading. A device that can be easily held in one hand while allowing the reader to reach out for a cup of their favorite beverage with the other! Readers know the importance of appropriate size as they can relate it to the newspapers. Yes, some prefer the full size of the more traditional papers but try reading those in an area with limited space. Even reading those in an economy class seat on an airplane that is full would be a challenge.

What Else?

Electronic reading devices are meant to be easily portable and usable in a number of situations and environments. Their design must therefore facilitate this in terms of size. If you need to be concerned about how to carry it along, then it is not for you. What would be a suitable size? Anything that is about the size of a basic paperback would pass the test. Can you pick and choose what and when you want to read? Would you be able to stop and continue from you left off or switch to something different?

Do you need something to be clarified? Can you pose a question and get an answer or several answers? Additionally, the reading device must be usable for long periods. Just as “talk-time” for a hand phone, the “read-time” is equally important for an electronic reading device and this comes down to battery life as well as time taken for a full recharge. Would you get everything you want and need in such a device? Certainly not. In exchange for convenience, a little compromise would be necessary.

Mobile phones of the present time have definitely evolved beyond just basic devices for calls or messages. Today, smart phones seem to be the next generation in terms of mobile communications. With tons of added features, including internet connectivity, multimedia enjoyment, and more, smart phones are must-haves for busy individuals. And with that, among the most well-known smart phone and PDA manufacturers in the world is none other than Palm, Inc.

Starting out in 1992 in Sunnyvale California, Palm Computing, Inc. came up with its first PDA called the Zoomer. The company’s founder was Jeff Hawkins, who along with other designers intended to make PDAs more consumer-friendly. After acquisitions years later, Palm emerged as one of the authorities when it comes to PDAs and smart phones. At the start of the new year 2009, Palm intended to wow its fans by debuting its newest release the Palm Pre, aimed to beat the seemingly unbeatable Apple iPhone.

What is the Palm Pre? This up and coming four ounce gadget has a 3.1 inch touch screen, and its slides up to reveal a QWERTY keypad. The operating system for the Palm Pre is the Linux based Palmweb OS, and this smart phone currently has CDMA, Bluetooth, and WiFi connectivity. Later on, Palm intends to release a 3G version. Apart from its generous 8 GB memory, the Palm Pre also has a 3 mega pixel digital camera equipped with LED flash.

In terms of inner features of the Palm Pre, it surely does not disappoint. According to the product page at the Palm, Inc. website, the Palm Pre allows for multitasking, so you can open several windows and apps at the same time. Also, there is a universal search options, so your Palm Pre can help you look easily through your contacts, messages, Wikipedia, and even Google.

To help you get things more organized, the Palm Pre can also connect your calendars and show them as one schedule, thanks to Palm Synergy technology. This includes calendars you set on your smart phone, your Facebook profile, and even Google calendars. In addition to those handy features, the Palm Pre also has integrated messaging, supports various audio, video, and image formats, as well as built-in Global Positioning System (GPS).

In the United States, the Palm Pre is expected to be out in the market in the first half of 2009. Gathering several awards after its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas, including Best in Smart Phones and Cell Phones, the Palm Pre will be exclusively distributed by the Sprint Nextel network in the US.

As of the first quarter of 2009, Vodafone has expressed its interests by negotiation with Palm regarding the release of the Palm Pre in the United Kingdom. Before Brit mobile fanatics will know it, Vodafone will soon own the exclusive rights to sell the Pre to its subscribers in the UK for the first three months upon the model’s launch. According to a report by Softpedia, Vodafone also intends to distribute the Palm Pre exclusively among its clientele in Spain and Germany by the middle of 2009.

The first question I ask myself when watching a remake/reboot is “what’s the purpose?” Does it approach the story in a way different than the original, improve any glaring faults or shortcomings, or change the setting to something more modern? Unfortunately The Wolfman not only accomplishes none of these, it’s also devoid of the original’s excellent atmosphere and suspense. Instead, adding only an obscene amount of gore and disappointingly mediocre CGI/makeup (considering its $85M budget).

The film, in keeping with the original, follows Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro) as he returns to his home after the disappearance/death of his brother. Soon after arriving, he is attacked and bitten by a werewolf and begins exhibiting the classic signs of being cursed by a werewolf. After making a miraculously swift recovery, the townsfolk grow weary of Talbot believing he is the beast and form a mob to hunt him. However, the remake begins to differ with the handling of the Talbot family playing a more prominent role than in the 1941 film.

The most disappointing aspect of the remake is that it’s just not scary. Surprising, considering that it’s supposed to be a horror/monster film. There is an utter lack of dread or uneasiness throughout and not even a single, cheap “boo” moment (that I remember). It’s almost more successful at being an action film, with some decent chase sequences and a climactic werewolf vs werewolf battle. Also lacking, is the memorable, or “iconic,” scene/shot which was prominent in all of the classic Universal monster films. Here, even the CGI heavy werewolf transformation scenes are cheesy and easily forgettable.

One bright spot however, is the casting. Benicio Del Toro is suitable as the titular character, not only bearing resemblance to Lon Chaney Jr but also a werewolf. Anthony Hopkins does well as Talbot Sr, hamming it up just enough without going overboard. Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving are solid, as expected, in limited roles as the love interest and Inspector. They’re both mostly used to further the plot as neither character is considerably developed. Particularly Blunt’s character, who is criminally underused. A better developed relationship between her and Talbot could have added a new dynamic and made the ending all the more sorrowful.

Although “The Wolfman” is not a horrible film by any means, it fails to deliver as a horror film, doesn’t improve upon its predecessor, or offer any reason to justify its production (other than monetary). I was very excited about seeing this remake as it was one of the few classic monster films yet to receive a modern update. While watching, I kept waiting for the expected “big scare” or attempt at an “iconic” scene. When the end credits began rolling, I was still waiting.

Disappointed.

For all of the talk about the Academy’s bias toward blockbuster pictures and big name stars over the years, they certainly have had their moments going the other way. Handing Jack Lemmon the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Glengarry Glen Ross is a good example (Pacino for Scent of a Woman is not). Either way, if you want to see all of the Oscar contenders and winners of recent times, you need a good mix of HD movie networks. Here are five channels showing the best satellite TV movies.

1. HBO. Because of all the terrific original series which have premiered on HBO over the years, one might forget its original focus on movies. Bringing the cable viewer both uncut films and controversial comedic presentations like Eddie Murphy’s Raw, HBO has always been known to deliver for a mature audience. They are still getting the job done with excellent series like Big Love and regular showings of new films like The Hangover and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. When it’s all said and done, HBO might have the most well-rounded presentation of all the big channels.

2. Showtime. When you pick up Showtime, you guarantee yourself a number of quality series as well as plenty of terrific movie programming. What is on tap at the moment? Edie Falco is starring as Nurse Jackie, while David Duchovny is getting himself into a lot of trouble on Californication. After these series (among which Brotherhood should also be mentioned), it’s all about movies and sports on Showtime. Boxing fans will love the variety of fights being shown throughout the year.

3. Starz. Maybe the lesser known of the premium satellite TV movie networks, Starz is nonetheless making a name for itself with its quality programming. Boasting more films per day than HBO or Showtime (a by product of the lack of series), Starz is in many ways the movie lover’s ideal station. They have a good blend on a daily basis, mixing in movies known for their great art direction and performances as well as the action factor.

4. IFC. In many ways the clearing house of independent, smaller budget and foreign movies, the Independent Film Channel is one of the best things going in satellite packages these days. On a typical day, you can see Glengarry Glen Ross followed by Oldboy and then even an Almodovar film. It’s the kind of variety you need to round out any film package, and you’ll see the other side the Academy is always sorting through.

5. Turner Classic Movies. When it’s all said and done and a little perspective has been shed on the films, Turner Classic Movies will get their hands on a picture and present it in the proper way. Host Robert Osborne knew the stars personally and he sheds light on the actors and the directors of nearly every picture. See modern classics like Raging Bull and vintage Oscar winners like The Apartment in HD, all in the course of an afternoon.

In the computing world, year 2009 was the year of netbooks and mini laptops. Most of the traditional computing companies together with not so well companies came out with small computing devices within the range of 300-500$. Year 2010 on the other hand, is expected to be the year of tablet PCs. Mini Laptops are a category of laptops that are lighter and smaller than regular laptops and are not suitable for processing intensive applications like movie playing. Tablet PCs are more like mini laptops with touchscreen technology.

Few big companies like HP, Sony and lenovo have already disclosed there plans for Tablet PCs in CES(Consumer Electronics Show) 2010. Furthermore, Microsoft has put behind its weight on HP’s model because it supports Windows 7 Operating System. Moreover, Apple is also rumored to come out with its own version of the device. This device is expected to be able to perform more complex computing as Apple would like the tablets to be used for normal computing requirements and not only for reading books or as a multimedia device.

Apple might use more complex finger gestures with the tablet, which would of course increase the learning time but might just do the trick of making the tablet PCs the main computer in the house.

2010 might also see companies launching various internet and consumer entertainment devices. This could include tablet PCs, some touch screen based mobile internet devices or some kind of smartphone or ebook readers. Overall the mobile internet device market would become more crowded. There would be lot of companies with different models of e-book readers, tablet PCs and smartphones, confusing the user much more. All this competition among companies might also prove to be a silver lining in the cloud as it would make sure that the prices of the new devices do not go through the roof. One thing is sure, that these technological inventions would have a definite shift in the way we work and manage our daily life. One of these technologies might also be the future of how we compute and communicate.

If you are filing for social security disability (SSD) or supplemental security income (SSI) benefits, you may have to submit to a consultative exam (CE), which is a physical or mental exam scheduled by the social security administration.

Not all individuals filing for SSD or SSI are required to go to a CE, but for those who have not been to a doctor within the last 60 days, or who have other medical conditions listed in their medical records for which they have not received prior treatment, a CE will in all likelihood be required before a disability examiner can render a decision on your claim.

A consultative medical exam is not scheduled for the purpose of prescribing medical treatment, nor is it a means to arrive at a diagnosis that will prove or disprove a medical disability. In fact, most CEs are fairly brief, and may last as little as 10 minutes, because their sole purpose is to meet the requirement that a disability examiner consider “recent medical evidence” before closing a case. In other words, it’s more of a formality, and will not overrule the other medical evidence which a claimant has supplied to the social security administration in his or her medical history.

However, sometimes doctors’ notes make reference to secondary medical conditions for which the claimant is not seeking benefits, such as depression, or insomnia, etc., fairly common complaints for those who are under the stress of dealing with chronic pain or fatigue, or for anyone who must consider leaving the workforce for that matter. If your physician has noted that you seem depressed or are suffering other mental symptoms for which you have not had treatment, your CE may consist of a mental exam, and yes, you must attend. Not only is not attending a scheduled CE grounds for denial of your disability claim, but it could also mean that you short yourself from receiving full compensation for any other impairments you might have. Either attend the scheduled CE or reschedule it if you are unable to make it that day.

Not all CEs are medical exams; some may require that a patient have recent medical tests to provide the disability examiner with a snapshot of their physical state as it is now. New X-rays, MRIs, or spirometry testing of pulmonary function may be required before a case is closed to show how your condition has improved, worsened, or if it remains stable.

One thing that you should prepare yourself for if you are scheduled for a consultative exam, and this is really word of mouth from those who have attended them before-many of the physicians who conduct CEs do not come off as the most caring individuals. While this is not true of all of them, to be sure, many social security disability claimants leave these exams feeling defensive, and that the doctor performing the exam doesn’t really care about them, or even believe that they are disabled. If this is your experience, do not put to much stock into what the physician performing the CE thinks or doesn’t think, because in the end it is really your treating physician’s opinion that will be given the most weight by the disability examiner.

In today’s society looks are more important than ever and unfortunately we all seem to buy into it one way or another. Plastic surgery is all the rage and more and more people are having operations to enhance their looks. If you want larger breasts you can have a breast enlargement operation, if you want them reduced you can do this too. We all want bright white teeth and having veneers is all the rage. But what happens when something goes wrong? We are left suffering and expected to carry on as normal.

Dental Negligence is where you have been treated by an NHS or private dentist but the standard of care is below average, resulting with prolonged dental problems. Obviously accidents’ can happen in any health profession as we are all human but when we pay for professional health care we expect our treatment to be of high standard. When standards slip errors occur and we are left suffering sometimes which no chance of the error being corrected.

Failure to diagnose a problem can lead to a condition getting worse. Misdiagnosis is where the wrong work is carried out or no work is carried out at all. Nerve damage during dental treatment is another area which could cause injury and long term damage. Unnecessary removal of teeth is another from of misdiagnosis or where a dentist carried out work that was not necessary. All of these are where dental health care has gone wrong which means you are entitled to claim compensation for these errors. Dentists have insurance to cover anyone wanting to sue them.

Those that pay for dental treatment will be well aware of how expensive the treatment is so you would expect them to give you the very best care. When things go wrong you certainly shouldn’t have to pay for the treatment but you might still expected too. However if you put in a claim for compensation and go on to win the claim you will be reimbursed fully. You will also get compensated for the suffering you has incurred as well as any possible future problems you might have. If you had a lot of time off work to have your dental treatment you will also be reimbursed for any loss of earnings.

Finding a competent personal injury claim lawyer can be tricky as there are so many out there. You only have to watch television and there are adverts talking about ‘where there is blame there is a claim’ which is true. However these companies might not offer you a personal service compared to companies who solely deal in personal injury claims. Looking online is one option and there are plenty of companies about. What would be a good idea is to ask for their ‘no win no fee’ agreement to be sent to you. Most reputable company will take on a case with no cost to yourself and you will receive 100% compensation. But there are companies that have small print which could mean you lose some of your compensation or are expected to pay for medical notes. So look around for a company that you trust.

It’s been all over the Internet, and people are happy with what they’ve downloaded, the Windows 7 beta in ISO form. The same one to be released next month to the public. But it seems Microsoft hasn’t gone off suing people for this leak (like the torrent trackers, e.g. Mininova). Are they happy that they’ve gotten their product out “quickly”, with a generally positive reception?

Maybe.

It’s not outside the realm of imagination to say that Microsoft did it, and it could have initiated the leak while MSDN/Technet testers were beta-testing the same build, making it look like some Good Samaritan leaked the ISO file for everyone to download and enjoy. After all, it is a widely accepted fact that Apple’s Mac OS X has been gaining more supporters as a sleek, scalable OS that still runs on an iMac (the G4 version… that’s right). And Microsoft has been heavily criticized for Windows Vista, which is known for being slow, not compatible with software, and just generally sucky. So Windows 7 was a chance to make things right. But how are you supposed to judge an upcoming OS if you don’t have it, and you’ve only seen Vista-like screenshots?

You “release” the beta early.

It could be Microsoft (under the pretence of a developer leaking it), but it also could be some developer that just did it for kicks. Either way, Microsoft got it right.

But did they? CES showed that they were getting something right, but it will be this summer until we can be certain ourselves.

The Asus Eee-Reader is expected to introduce a touch of color and a ton of changes into the e-reader market. The devices of the future will maximize the reading experience, expand the reach of the reader, and thrill the users. Discover how Eee puts a modern spin on a traditional and favorite pastime as well as lightening the load for students, businesses, and the average reader.

The Asus Color Eee-Reader, named after the Eee PC netbooks, also created by ASUSTeK Computer Inc. (ASUS), is expected to feature a full color touchscreen. Poised to make its probable debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2010, Asus Color Eee-Reader should make a big splash in the e-reader market. Yet its amazing color, in contrast to the standard black and white, is not the only bright spot in the Asus Eee-reader. The device allows readers to enjoy a book – anywhere, anytime – surrounded by glorious color and divine design in a modern device with maximum function.

With its dual panels and hinged spine, this innovative device reads like a book and looks like a book but acts like a computer. Users will be able to read an e-book by ‘turning’ the pages with the touchscreen. Add in an affordable price, and all in all, the Asus Eee-Reader will be an amazing addition to the eBook Readers market.

The layout of the Eee-Reader is expected to be more complex than in other leading e-readers. With its LCD-sized display and thin form, this device can be flipped in an A4 orientation. The dual panels create a widescreen effect (perfect for video) without compromising the function of either screen.

The two screens offer a flexible working space in which users can adjust the size of the virtual keyboard and touchpad to suit their usage. Students can read reference material on one screen and browse the web using the additional panel. Social network members can check their updates on one panel while browsing through an e-book on the second screen.

Sporting a speaker, webcam, and microphone, while allowing users to make Skype calls, the Asus Eee-Reader offers every convenience. Yet this innovative reader may be an inexpensive choice. ASUS is expected to release two separate versions – a budget model and a premium device with extra features. The budget e-reader is expected to sell in the $165 US/£100 range while the premium model will have a higher purchase price. Therefore it can successfully compete with Cool-er eBook Reader, appearing in March 2009. As it was noted in the article “Cool-er: Intuitive Marketing or Blatant Copying”, Cool-er was born as the lightest and smallest e-reader on the market, and also the most affordable, and in eight bright colours.

ASUS has come through previously for their customers with low prices for computers. Already described as possibly “the world’s cheapest e-reader,” Asus Eee-Reader is touted as being the next groundbreaking device with the most value for the least cost. Oddly enough, what makes Asus Eee-Reader stand out is what makes it blend in with the treasured, old-style reading experience. Its dual screens, one outstanding feature of Asus Eee-Reader, make it easier to read a modern e-book without compromising that ‘real’ book feeling.
