OLED Laptops Soon a Reality
About OLED Laptops:
OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diode) Laptop’s are rumored to hit the US Market in early 2009, and are likely to be shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) during the first week of january! They boast an unbelievably thin (3mm) screen because OLEDs use light-emitting diodes (hence the name) made up of electroluminescent organic compounds to produce different colors. Because OLED displays do not require a backlight, they are thinner and use less power, and the images are bright, colorful, and visible at an angle. And you can also say goodbye to the conventional keyboard, and hello to touch screen micro thin OLED keyboards! As always, expect state of the art technology and super processors to make these new laptops run faster than ever!
Overview of OLED Benefits:
* Extremely Power Efficienct
* Very Thin and Light-Weight (for both the screen and keyboard)
* Brighter than a typical LCD screen
* Wide Viewing Angle (~ 160 degree viewing angle)
* Excellent Contrast (> 1,000,000:1)
* Once developed the Manufacturing Process should be Inexpensive (the process is similar to ink-jet printing)
OLED prototypes:
Samsung and LG have both released pictures of prototype OLED Laptops. LG’s new “e-book” features a natural gas and liquid fuel battery for elongated battery life. It received the Red Dot award for Best concept design in 2006. Samsungs model features some of the same benefits, but for a company that is relatively unknown in the US Laptop market, Samsung is really stepping up to the plate.
OLED Problems:
Like any other new product, the OLED Laptop did have a major setback, it’s lifespan was very short, lasting under a year in most cases. However with the new PHOLED a life span of up to 20,000 hours can be expected. This should be more than enough to help fuel the production of these new super computers.
